During summer we protect our skin with high level SPF sunscreen, but often neglect to protect our hair. Hair can be damaged by sun exposure, UVB rays have been shown to break down essential keratin proteins. This weakens weaken hair and makes it brittle. In addition, UVA rays have been shown to destroy pigment, which is why both natural and colored hair fade in the sun. Look out for products labeled “colour extending” or “anti breakage” – these act as “hair sun screen” and are bound to help in protecting your hair against the sun this summer.

Melons and bananas are awesome summer fruit that should be included in your diet to ensure healthy hair. These fruits provide sufficient amounts of vitamin A to nurture sun-damaged hair. Vitamin A helps your scalp produce sebum, which makes hair soft and shiny.

Mash fruits to form a thick paste and apply generously to the hair. Apply a shower cap to lock in moisture and allow paste to work it’s magic fro 45 minutes. Wash hair thoroughly and style as desired. Hair should be noticeably shiny and healthier after one treatment depending on your hair’s condition and texture before. The daily recommendation for vitamin A is 5 000 – 6 000 IU (International Units). Exceeding this amount could be baneful, so it’s best to stay within this range.
