As with the little black dress, the flat iron has become many a girl’s best friend. This nifty device has taken hairstyles from drab to cover ready hair. The excessive/ daily use of silicone and a flat iron causes the cuticles in your hair to seal. A layer of resistance against any shampoo or artificial colour treatment is formed – leaving hair looking synthetic and fluffy. To avoid damage, detox hair weekly with a clarifying shampoo. Use a light heat-protectant Kerastase cream and be sure to flat iron at a temperature below 200°C. Use your flat iron to “touch up” your hair once a week or at a push, every other day – avoid daily use at all cost.

Vitamins
Vitamins are essential for natural hair growth – vitamins which encourage growth, are:
- Vitamin A acts as antioxidant which is good for your scalp.
- Vitamin E promotes blood circulation and increases immune function, which in turn stimulates growth.
- Vitamin B contains components known as melanin, which gives colour to hair. The vitamin B family also has the ability to induce more blood circulation to enrich hair follicles.
Massage: A head/ scalp massage is a simple hair growth treatment. Simply massage using fingertips and work your way from the back of the neck moving around the hairline. This increases blood circulation to the area. Increased blood flow stimulates nutrients that can be easily transferred to the hair follicles. Scalp massagers can also be purchased at pharmacies and are a great add to your hair tool collection.
Herbal Treatments: Nature has given us herbs to fight almost anything. An oral intake of Green tea stimulates hair growth. Hair lotions containing aloe vera also promote strong & health regrowth.

During summer we protect our skin with high level SPF sunscreen, but often neglect to protect our hair. Hair can be damaged by sun exposure, UVB rays have been shown to break down essential keratin proteins. This weakens weaken hair and makes it brittle. In addition, UVA rays have been shown to destroy pigment, which is why both natural and colored hair fade in the sun. Look out for products labeled “colour extending” or “anti breakage” – these act as “hair sun screen” and are bound to help in protecting your hair against the sun this summer.

Melons and bananas are awesome summer fruit that should be included in your diet to ensure healthy hair. These fruits provide sufficient amounts of vitamin A to nurture sun-damaged hair. Vitamin A helps your scalp produce sebum, which makes hair soft and shiny.
Mash fruits to form a thick paste and apply generously to the hair. Apply a shower cap to lock in moisture and allow paste to work it’s magic fro 45 minutes. Wash hair thoroughly and style as desired. Hair should be noticeably shiny and healthier after one treatment depending on your hair’s condition and texture before. The daily recommendation for vitamin A is 5 000 – 6 000 IU (International Units). Exceeding this amount could be baneful, so it’s best to stay within this range.

Melon & Banana Hair Cocktail
I was asked to style for the cover of this month’s Get it magazine. Ariella is such a dynamic woman. She definitely has a vivacious and playful side to her personality. She is a natural beauty and I wanted to reflect that. Her hair was created in an up-style, yet looked natural and stylish.
